Peter graduated from Curley in 2008 and enrolled at Towson University to major in journalism. Claiming an ever-present passion for sports, he wanted to be involved with athletics, but did not know how that would be realized. He somehow found his way to radio station WNST AM 1570/WNST.net, and has now been there for over 6 years. “It’s been a tremendous experience,” he reports, “and an honor working with Nestor Aparicio, helping to build a sports media company in this evolving new media age.”
Peter is the Chief Operating Officer at WNST. Among his many responsibilities is pursuing advertising partners. “It’s been a great experience developing business relationships with so many local business leaders that have since turned into quality friendships,” he says excitedly. “And I also get to stay involved in the sports side of the business as well, covering the Ravens, Orioles, and Terps. I watched the Ravens win the Super Bowl in New Orleans in 2013. I’ve experienced many moments that I never dreamed of experiencing.”
Towards the end of 2016, his long-time friend, Eric Oppel ’02, approached Peter with the idea to open a NY-style delicatessen in Dundalk. Eric has been in the deli business his entire life, even dating back to his time as a student at Curley. Growing up in Dundalk and still living there, Peter felt there were many places to get pizza or burgers in the Dundalk area, but no where to find real NY-style deli food. So Deli-ish opened on June 9, 2017. Peter was overwhelmed by the response they received. “The first week we were open, a couple of my former teachers at Curley came in,” he recounts, “and we took their picture in front of our logo in the store. We shared it on social media and it instantly went viral. Ever since then, not a day goes by where customers don’t ask about our Curley roots or tell us about their connection to the school. We now have very real-life experience of the power of the Curley Family.”
Peter helps Eric with the deli as much as possible. Eric manages the day to day operation, while Peter stays involved in the marketing and social media, building relationships locally. They are looking forward to opening their second location in early 2018. It is an exciting time for these Curley alumni, and they have big plans. “Our goal is to open up a new store every year for the foreseeable future, and I definitely think that’s a realistic achievement for us. We’re so thankful for the Curley support, and we welcome all of the Curley Family to come by and check us out if they haven’t already. We’re located on 700 Wise Avenue in Dundalk, and anyone can view our website at www.delibaltimore.com or find Deli-ish on Facebook. We also have a full catering menu and cater events of all shapes and sizes, from a casual bull roast to a black tie business gathering. We’d be honored to cater your next luncheon, wedding, or other event. It goes without saying that we’ll always take care of our fellow Curley brothers.”
Their Curley connection is enshrined on their menu in the sandwich they developed called the “Curley Friar.” It contains corned beef, pastrami, roast brisket and turkey.
Having completed college, launched a career and started a business, Peter is grateful for the education he received at Curley that prepared him for every door that he encountered. But it was more. It’s being a part of the Brotherhood, a part of the Curley Family. “It’s not something I can really put into words. Rather, you have to experience it for yourself to really understand what it means.”
Peter relates this story. “When I was a freshman in 2004, I remember being at the orientation and hearing a speaker talk about how his 4 years at Curley were the best years of his life. Of course, being the 14 year-old boy that I was, I laughed, snickered, and thought to myself ‘yeah right.’ Thirteen years later, I can honestly say that he was 100% right. I met friends who will be friends forever, and I still stay in touch with many of my teachers who have since become friends. It’s truly a special place, and I’m confident that anyone who spends time around the school will discover the same.”
