Catching Up With…TJ Topper ‘96

Anthony, also known as TJ,  graduated from Curley in 1996 and made his way to the Community College of Baltimore County.  Filled with the entrepreneurial spirit, he opened a number of businesses looking for his niche. He went to work in 2008 for the family business, FenceMasters, and is still active, but realized that the food business was the place for him.  In that same year, he opened Gunpowder Catering and built that company into a successful business. (TJ’s company catered the Lacrosse Crab Feast last November.)

TJ has taken his skills and love of the food business to the next level.  He is currently the Director of Business Development at Depalo’s Mid-Atlantic Resturant Supply. “I work with some of the largest restaurants and bars in Maryland on a daily basis,” he says.  “My day can go from solving equipment problems in the kitchen to suggesting a new type of bathroom floor cleaner.  I deal with a lot of Curley alumni and that has helped me grow my business and given me the opportunity to help them grow theirs as well.”

TJ credits his years at Curley with teaching him the values to be a hardworking individual who carries himself well.  “I enjoyed every day that I walked the halls of that school,” he remembers.  “Even today when I come back it feels so good to be there and I always feel welcome.  The foundation that I have been able to build my success on all stems from the education and guidance that I received in my four years at Curley.  The great network of Alumni has also played a big role in many aspects of my professional and personal career.”

TJ can be seen at many Curley events, although some may not recognize him.  In 2010, TJ weighed 380 pounds and decided to take his health into his own hands. Enrolling in a program called Take Shape For Life, he was able to lose 150 pounds. That is an amazing feat!

Ten years ago, TJ married Anna Heilman and they have two boys, Anthony, Jr. (8 years old) and Lucas (5 years old.)  In addition to his family, TJ loves golf, fishing and cars.  You can contact him at  or  .
