On Saturday evening, the award-winning Curley Bands under the direction of Mr. David Stauffer, filled the auditorium with powerful music. Concert Band began with a Ralph Vaughn Williams arrangement of three British sea-songs, then performed a powerful composition by Johnnie Vinson called “O’er the Land of the Free” which contained echoes of “America the Beautiful” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The Concert Band performed three other compositions before ending with the “Looney Tunes Overture” (Holcombe.)
Jazz Ensemble always gets one’s toes tapping. They began with “Come On, Come Over” and “Move” before getting into the beautiful “Brasilian Love Affair.” The Jazz Ensemble played “North Africa” and “Mr. Magic” before concluding the evening with the encore “Paper Moon.” Soloists included Matt Selba, EJ Adjaye, Vincent Ray, Daniel Nakasone, Chimaobi Iwumune, Quincy Richburg, Ethan Bower, Joshua Occasio and Kyle Rosenberger.
Between sets, the following awards were presented:
Louis Armstrong Jazz Award - Chimaobi Iwumune;
Woody Herman Jazz Award – Kyle Rosenberger;
John Philip Sousa Award – Vincent Ray.
