Bands Win In Charleston

The Instrumental performing ensembles travelled for the first time to Charleston, South Carolina to participate in the Charleston Music Festival.  The week-end was filled with history, sightseeing, music and beautiful weather. The ensembles toured a plantation founded in 1676, learned about rice farming, stood on ground that was destroyed during Sherman’s March to the Sea and were again reminded of the harshness of slavery on the southern plantation.  The role of Charleston throughout the Revolutionary War and Civil War, to present day was brought to life through a horse and carriage tour, a boat tour of the harbor and a walking ghost story tour in downtown Charleston.

The Ensembles performed for a panel of nationally recognized adjudicators, parents and friends on Saturday.  They also had the opportunity to see and listen to ensembles from other states.  The Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble both received the highest rating at the festival, earning a Superior Rating.  Vance Ellis (18) received an adjudicator’s award for his solos in Curley Jazz.  The Drumline received a rating of excellent.    All three ensembles received a full half an hour clinic with a specialist in their respective fields immediately following their performance.

We also had the opportunity to meet and hear from alumni living in the Charleston area.  It was a non-stop activity filled week-end, seemingly endless hours on the bus, but extremely rewarding watching them grow not only musically, but as men of Curley.  We can all be proud of them.
