<< BackCatching Up With...Dave Makowiecki '93
Dave graduated from Curley in 1993 and matriculated in Towson University where
he studied Jazz Performance with some of the best trumpet players in the
business. He played lead trumpet in the TU Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and
Marching Band, as well as performed in numerous musicals for both Towson
University and local theater groups.
As one of the top call trumpet players in the
Baltimore/DC area, he has had the opportunity to perform for presidents and
dignitaries of the United States, South Africa, France and Germany. He also
entertained audiences with national acts such as The Temptations, The Four Tops,
Gladys Knight, Mary Wilson, and Lee Ann Womack. Locally, he can be heard with
Charles Village Brass Quartet, Crack the Sky and Technicolor Motor Home, which
features the sounds of Steely Dan. In addition, he
travels up and down the east coast with The Rollex Band (WeddingWire “ Bride’s
Choice Award” for top party/dance/wedding band two-years
running.)
When not on stage,
Dave is in high demand as a studio musician, having been part of the recording
of over 30 CD’s. He also has done recording session work for major television
networks and movie production companies. Have you ever seen the movie
Wedding Crashers? Dave was the trumpet player in the band at the
Cleary wedding!
In addition to
his freelance trumpet work, Dave is a private trumpet instructor at Music and
Arts Center and Hunt Valley Music. He has shared his talents with his alma
mater as the Director of AC Arts and the Assistant Band Director. “I love
the variety in my jobs,"
he says. "Even though everything I do is music related, every aspect presents
different challenges, whether it’s playing in front of thousands of people or teaching a beginner trumpet
student.”

Dave explains the AC
Arts Program: “AC Arts is Curley’s program established to promote music and
arts in the community. This is a private lesson program designed for Curley
students as well as non-Curley students of all ages, genders, abilities, and
levels. The lessons are one-on-one instruction with some of Maryland’s finest
musicians and educators.” For more information, please visit the Arts section
of the Curley web site or email Dave directly.
Curley honed
Dave's musical skills and made a big difference in his life. “My Curley
education enhanced my strong belief in God and in the value of living in the
footsteps and teachings of Jesus. This made me a better person, husband, and
father. Professionally, Curley continues to show me the importance of
preparation and being the best that I can be, all the time.” While at Curley,
Dave was in the Jazz Ensemble and Concert Band. He can still be seen in the
trumpet line as part of the Alumni Band at "All That Curley
Jazz."
In 2001 Dave married
Barbara Lundin (Catholic High ’93) and
they have two children. “At age 7, our
little drummer boy, Tyler Joseph, is the youngest student in the AC Arts program
and a proud future member of the Archbishop Curley Class of 2023. Our 3-year
old daughter, Katelyn Grace, enjoys dancing - ballet and tap - and being the
cutest thing on earth.“ The family lives in Abingdon.
