POETRY SLAM 2013

On April 23, 2013 the Library Advisory Council, moderated by Mrs. Kennedy and Mrs. Hauf, hosted the annual Poetry Slam.   Students were encouraged to write their own poems and share them before a group of their peers in the library during various periods of the school day.   Participation was very good and the assembled students listened respectfully.

The winners of the Slam were:
Adrian Bell '15, Luke Webb '15, Deion Smoot '15, Nick Freeman '14, Torian Hope '15 and Jackson Teets '15.

Excerpts from some of the winning poets:

Jackson Teets '15
“I want to fly high
higher than the horizon line,
past the sky.
I fly with a fire in my eye…
maybe not today nor tomorrow,
for the night drowns out my sorrow.
For in the morning, new hope arises,
When I can finally fly higher than the horizon.”

Torian Hope '15
“…sometimes I wish people could see the world through my eyes.
Sometimes I wish I could see the world through their eyes.
Sometimes I wish people could be me.
Sometimes I wish I could be them…”

Deion Smoot '15
“…I gotta spread some truth before I die.
I have to ask what, when, where, why.
Listen…we want to live for their acceptance,
But that’s the opposite of progression.
To discover something new we must embrace their rejection.
Their doubt, their mocks, their fears of what you can do.
Because, if you’re working harder than everyone else,
There’s no way you can lose.
I leave you with this one line:
If they don’t understand you  now
Then you’re ahead of your time.”

Adrian Bell '15 and Luke Webb '15
"...Dark of the Moon was our last sighting
From the Moon to the Earth was in kryptic writing
Autobots roll out, Decepticons fall back
Robots in disguise…"
