ARCHBISHOP CURLEY FOOTBALL

2012-13 SEASON SUMMARY

The 2012 Archbishop Curley Friars finished up the football season with a final record of 8 wins and 3 losses, a second place finish in the conference and a semi- finals playoff appearance.

The Friars began the season in the I-95 Classic at Towson University against city power, Patterson High School.  The Friars led most of the way aided by the play of senior running back & defensive linemen, Nik D’Avanzo who accounted for 55 yards rushing and the game winning touchdown.  D’Avanzo was dominant on the defensive side as well finishing the game with 11 tackles, a forced fumble, 2 sacks and a blocked punt.  D’Avanzo was honored for his performance by the Baltimore Sun paper as the “Athlete of the Week”.  In weeks two and three, the Friars outscored their opponents 73-6 including a 42-6 victory over Owings Mills under the lights in the Curley Bowl.  The Friars were led by a slew of runners which included Garrett Reynolds, Kenny Thomas, Fred Johnson and Nick Farmer.  The Curley defense also came up big led by seniors Jake Harant and Ian Scott.  After two tough losses to St. Mary’s and St. Paul’s during week 4 & 5, the Friars went on a five game winning streak outscoring their opponents 150 -28.  Big wins over defending league champions, Annapolis Area Christian on Homecoming, Boys’ Latin and rival John Carroll prevailed the Friars into the conference  playoffs.  During the five game winning streak, seniors, James Logan, Alphonso Smith, Shawn Ryan, Dion Reed, Sean Gray, Nik D’Avanzo, Kenny Thomas, Ian Scott and Jamil Henry were steady performers on offense, defense & special teams.  Their leadership and focus allowed the Friars to enter the playoffs as one of the teams to beat.  Unfortunately, The Friars suffered a tough loss on the road to St. Paul’s School who had beaten them earlier in the year.  The game was well played by both schools and was still in doubt mid-way through the third quarter until a string of turnovers by Curley ended their hopes of a title.

The Friars ended the season ranked #7 in the State of Maryland among the Private Schools and #16 in the Baltimore Sun Poll Final Ranking.  In addition, the Friars had five players named to the All State Football Team,  Nik D’Avanzo, 1st Team, Jake Harant, 2nd Team, James Logan 3rd Team and Kenny Thomas and Ian Scott, Honorable Mention.
