ARCHBISHOP CURLEY WRESTLING
2011-12 SEASON SUMMARY
This was an exceptional year for Curley Friar Wrestling. The team posted an overall, 11-4 record in dual meets, with important wins over #2 ranked St. Paul's, John Carroll, and Loyola. The team also defeated public school powerhouses, Old Mill, Rising Sun and Hereford. The team started out the season with a 4th place finish at the Ray Oliver Invitational and took six wrestlers to the nation’s toughest tournament, The Beast of the East. Following some impressive individual performances in early season competition, the squad finished 2nd in both the Winters Mill Falcon Invitational and the Franklin Invitational. During the mid season the team posted a 7-1 Record at the Cobra Duals in Harford County.
Peaking at the end of the season was a main goal for this team and they did just that. The Friars had three MIAA Champions this season including: Corey Huntley, Purnell Summers and Avery Williams. Brett Brigman was a runner up. The team took a 4th place finish and finished an impressive 5th place at the Maryland Independent State Tournament, crowning a champion in sophomore, Corey Huntley. Huntley went on to win a National Prep Championship the following week at Lehigh University, and earned Prep All-American honors along with teammate Purnell Summers, who placed 8th. Huntley, who was unscored upon in the event, was Curley’s fourth Prep Champion since 1997, when the late graduate from Curley, Sal Aquia, won a championship for Blair Academy. Curley Wrestlers had a Top 10 finish at the tournament and ended the season ranked #4 by The Baltimore Sun Paper and #7 in the State polls by Varsity Sports Network.
The Junior Varsity squad had outstanding dual meet wins over Old Mill, Loyola, Pallotti, and St.Pauls. Freshman, Kai Lee, led the way with an overall record of 15-2, and a team-leading 12 of those wins coming by way of pin. Brock Bushyager [12-4; 6 pins], Nate Litsch [10-7; 9 pins], Kevin McGuire [8-5; 5 pins], Garrett Higgins [10-7; 6 pins], and Scott Landess [11-4; 10 pins] all were team leaders as reflected by their records. The team had multiple wrestlers place at each of their in-season tournaments, paced by individual titles of Brock Bushyager at the Atholton Invitational; Kai Lee and Brock Bushyager at the Saint John Baptiste de La Salle Tournamnet; and Kai Lee at the Winters Mills Falcon Invite. At the annual JV Championships held at Curley, Kai Lee and Scott Landess took home gold for the team in addition to 6 other placers (Mike King, Jarrett Bushyager, Brock Bushyager, Kevin McGuire, Garrett Higgins, Scott Landess, and Dominic Tew).
