THE 2011 BAND TRIP
TO NEW YORK CITY
The Concert Band, the Jazz Ensemble and
the Drumline each won the Gold Award at the Heritage Festivals in New
York City. The Heritage Festivals is the most prestigious high school
music competition, featuring internationally-renowned adjudication and
top-notch venues. The Concert Band and the Jazz Ensemble each earned
the Adjudicator's Award for having an average score higher than 92%.
The same two units combined to win the Sweepstakes Award, for having the
highest combined score in the festival. Kevin Callahan and Chris
Young earned the Music Maestro Award for displaying extraordinary
musical ability and sensitivity.
The trip was not all work--not by a long shot. Mr. Ed Lawrence
organized a walking tour from Battery Park to "Ground Zero" and students
heard a very moving account of the events of 9/11 as told by a street
historian who was there that day. What timing to be there during such
an historic weekend.
After the awards ceremony on Saturday night, students and parents
enjoyed a river dinner/dance cruise. Students had the opportunity to
socialize with the students from bands that traveled to New York from
all over the U.S as well as Canada. Communicating with the French
musicians from Quebec, Canada was a highlight for our students. The
weather and New York skyline were beautiful and again very moving to
cruise by the Staue of Liberty at night during this historically
significant week.
As photos come in from parents, we will be posting them on the website.
