CURLEY DRUMLINE

There is something about drums and cymbals creating a rhythm that gets one's foot tapping and spirit moving.   Such is the effect of the Curley Drumline.

The Drumline is a part of Curley’s Instrumental Program that also includes the Jazz Ensemble and the Concert Band.  This is the sixth year for the Drumline at Curley. Jason Berlin was the instructor for three years and Rick Reely is the current instructor. The Drumline was formed because the number of freshmen entering Curley with a percussion background exceeded the number of percussion parts for the Concert Band. The Drumline gives those students the opportunity to play percussion and develop their skills. Students from every class participate, so it is a good experience for freshmen to bond with upper classmen as they enter the school.

The Drumline rehearses on Mondays and Wednesdays in the music center for the entire school year. They perform at all the home football games at halftime. At homecoming each year they play the halftime for the soccer game as well as the halftime for the football game. During the football halftime, the Drumline has the additional challenge of marching while playing. This is a challenge because most students have no background in marching when they come to high school.  And this year the Drumline performed in the rain!

Each year for Open House the Drumline performs outside to welcome students and parents to the school.  At the end of the school year they perform in the auditorium for Freshmen Orientation which is a good opportunity for incoming students and parents to see their show. They perform at three pep rallies during the year for all the sports programs at school.  They have marched in the St Patrick's Day and Thanksgiving Day parades in Baltimore.

In May each year the drumline, alone with the concert band and jazz band, go on their annual band trip. We are proud to say that each year since the drumline started it has had superior scores and has received Gold awards. These awards are on display in the Music Center and hallway near the SDR.

The drumline consist of 4 percussion instruments which are snare drum, quint toms (5 drums of different sizes grouped together) tonal bass drums and cymbals. This year there are 19 members in the drumline.
