CURLEY GALA XV

"Midnight Masquerade"

March 27, 2010

The fifteenth Curley Gala took place on Saturday evening,  March 27, 2010.   Fr. Michael Martin, Curley's President, celebrated the liturgy of Palm Sunday for ninety Gala guests prior to the beginning of the festivities.

The doors to Midnight Masquerade opened at 6:00 PM.  Gala guests enjoyed hors d'oeurvres and perused the over 700 silent auction gifts spread out over nine tables in the fitness center, the gym lobby and the SDR hallway.  Bids on the first table closed at 7:30.

At 8:00 PM the guests moved into the wonderfully decorated gym for dinner.   A video presentation on the service component of a Curley education was featured.  Fr. Michael addressed the guests with his usual mix of humor and serious concerns.  Then a delicious surf and turf dinner was served.  During dinner, the silent auction tables continued to close.  Curley students, dressed in tuxedos, carried the gifts from the closed tables to the SDR where the gifts are boxed and made ready to be picked up.

The Verbal Auction began at 10:00 PM.   The guest auctioneer was Mr. Jonathan Melnick.   But, before the bidding got underway, a surprise video tribute to Fr. Michael was presented.  Pictures of Fr. Mike as a student, priest, principal and president as well as comments from various people associated with Curley wree included.  Even Fr. Michael's mother, Mrs. Bev Martin, was included in the video.  A standing ovation followed, which Fr. Mike accepted graciously.

Then the bidding on the 29 Verbal Auctions commenced.  Mr. Melnick continued to remind folks that "all the money goes to the boys at Curley."   When the auction was over, many had donated generously to Curley and won some very interesting gifts.   The last event of the night was the drawing for the $2500 Raffle.  Congratulations to Donna Morris; she was the holder of winning ticket #744.  Her son Zach Gonzalez ’10 sold the winning ticket.   The evening ended around 11:30 PM and an army of students and volunteers made initial clean-up.  It was a great evening!

Needless to say, the success of an event like the Curley Gala depends on the hard work and generosity of many.   And to many, we owe our gratitude and a very big Curley THANK YOU.
