ARCHBISHOP CURLEY SOCCER
2012-13 SEASON SUMMARY
The Varsity soccer team finished the fall campaign with a record of 14-4-2 (10-2-2 in league). The regular season saw the squad earn the top seed for the MIAA A Conference playoffs and hold the #1 spot in the Baltimore Sun poll for several weeks. A tough loss to Gilman in the conference semifinal couldn’t overshadow an excellent season for the boys.
Highlights for the year included victories over nine ranked opponents including a season sweep of MIAA champion Loyola. Impressive non-league results were recorded over River Hill, Broadneck, St. Paul’s, and The Shipley School. The offense exploded for 47 goals in twenty games while the defense held opponents scoreless in seven matches.
The coaching staff would like to thank the following seniors for their contributions to the soccer program: Jake Ossie, Michael Lee, Michael Sauers, Nick York, Casey Bechtel, Michael Monroe, and Austin Young.
Playing better soccer than their final record would indicate the junior varsity finished at 4-10-4. The team struggled to find the back of the net which led to several heartbreaking losses. High points for the season were victories over Severn, St. Paul’s, St. Joe, and John Carroll. Among the team’s three ties were well played contests against Howard County power, River Hill and McDonogh.
The Fresh-Soph squad had their best season in years for first-year coach Mark Halcott who previously assisted with the JV squad. The Friars finished 3-2-3 and were just one game away from playing in the championship match. Their only two losses came at the hands of Loyola. Two wins over St. Joe and a thrilling 1-0 victory against rival Calvert Hall were memorable moments for the scrappy side.
