ARCHBISHOP CURLEY FOOTBALL
2009-10 SEASON SUMMARY
After losing 20 starters from last years 8-3 team which included two division 1 scholarship players, the 2009 varsity football team had the tough task of trying to the fill the void. The team finished the 2009 season with a final record of 3 wins and 8 losses and a 6th place overall finish in the MIAA "B" conference 10 team division. Despite the final record, several newcomers from last years junior varsity were able to gain valuable playing time and experience. With an influx of new players along with an inexperienced senior class, the Friars were not able to overcome some early season mistakes as well as a difficult schedule. The team did make progress by the mid-season point and were able to pull out an overtime win over St. Paul's in addition to big wins over Severn School and St. John's Catholic Prep. T
The offense was led by junior running backs Joe Evans, Antond McDonald and Dominck Hezekiah along with senior workhorse Pat Diamond. Diamond, an all league pick led the 2009 team in touchdowns with 7. This group of running backs accounted for over 2000 rushing yards for the year. Junior QB, Vinney Vendetti finished the season on a strong note after completing key passes in games down the stretch. The offensive line made up of seniors Tavon Mayne and Steve Risso along with juniors Kenny Michael, Marcus Maddox, Josh Wollschlager, sophomore Chancelor Bell and freshmen James Logan improved as the year went on. Newcomer John Rybak and senior returner Leo Johnson were steady blockers at their tight end positions.
The defense, although young, returned junior linebacker and team captain Demonya Womack. Womack an all -conference selection led the team in tackles from his inside line backer position. Other key contributors on defense included Anthony Williams, Jerrell Nunnally, Eric Price, Gary Wade, Joe Wade, Aaron Holloway, James Logan, Alex Ikpim, Cody Danna, DJ Sartori, Derek Williams, Brad Faulhaber and freshmen line backer Jake Harant.
The special teams were led by first year kickers Gage Wegmann, Lou Anderson and Cody Danna. Wegmann's game winning extra point in overtime sealed Curley's first win of the year over St. Paul's. Anderson and Danna were both steady performers throughout the course of the year.
