Today is the great feast of St. Patrick. He was both a humble and courageous man. The determination to accept suffering and success guided his life as God’s instrument for winning most of Ireland for Christ. Not originally from Ireland, he was brought there as a slave and returned there after his ordination. He gained his sainthood by his efforts to convert the pagan population of Ireland. He endured oppressions from the pagan population, but through his perseverance and faith, eventually won them over as converts.
Let us pray the prayer of St. Patrick,
Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort me and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in the hearts of all that love me, Christ in the mouth of friend and stranger. I bind unto myself the Name, the strong Name of the Trinity, Amen.
