We are excited to announce the implementation of COVID-19 surveillance testing at Archbishop Curley High School as part of our ongoing effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our school.
The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) recommend the use of surveillance testing as part of a layered prevention approach, to catch asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic COVID-19 cases as early as possible. Surveillance testing will help promptly identify and isolate coronavirus cases in our school community, which will help maintain in-person instruction and minimize disruption to the academic year by allowing those identified as close contacts to “Test-To-Stay,” rather than quarantine at home.
The Archdiocese of Baltimore has partnered with Raleigh-based MAKO Medical for the implementation of in-school surveillance testing. Clinicians from MAKO, in coordination with our school nurse, Krista Hanlin, will oversee the testing at our school. A nasal swab collection will be administered, with the sample sent to the MAKO lab for processing. Within 24 to 48 hours, test results will be sent to parents/guardians, school officials and the state and local health department. If a student or adult on campus receives a positive result from the PCR test administered, the student or staff member will be placed into isolation and sent home for a 10-day period of quarantine, beginning on the date the test was administered.
n order for your student to participate in this free testing program, you will need to register your student. A parent or guardian must register any minor under 18 years old. You will provide a one-time consent and HIPAA authorization to share testing results with Archbishop Curley High School and the Archdiocese of Baltimore Department of Catholic schools. All testing information is confidential. Your child will not be tested without your consent.

Registration in the surveillance testing program is required for all student athletes in Archdiocese of Baltimore high schools participating in school-sanctioned winter sports. Student athletes must be registered in the surveillance testing program, regardless of vaccination status, by November 15, 2021.
Additionally, surveillance testing may be a requirement to participate in other school-sponsored programs, such as overnight retreats. Routine testing can reduce the spread of COVID-19 by 50%, especially in large settings such as schools. Therefore, we strongly encourage all families to participate in the surveillance testing program.
