The Black Student Union of Curley sponsored an assembly to the students to celebrate Black History Month. Guided by co-moderators of the Black Student Union, Ms. Sheneika Grayson, English Instructor at Curley and Mr. Charles Jackson ’02, the students opened the assembly with a prayer.
A small group of students (Dezmin Lewis, Jesse Windham III, Chris Pond, Kevin Riley, Malachi Peterson, Luiz Funez and Aidan Williams) sang with Ms. Grayson “You Have Won The Victory,” accompanied by Mr. Ryan and the Praise Band.
Another group (Zion Pates, Joseph Curry, Skylar Harvey, Zion Stokes) recited the lyrics to “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as the Black National Anthem. This song was originally written by James Weldon Johnson (1871 – 1938) for a presentation in celebration of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.
Gavin Hibbert and Joseph Curry gave speeches on the meaning and importance of Brotherhood.
A video by Byron Pitts ’76 on the history of Black History Month was presented.
Mr. Jackson and Jameson Kobrick led a game of interesting facts about African-Americans in history.
The assembly was well received by the students of Curley.
